What is Murano glass?
Murano glass is produced on a small island in the Venetian Lagoon using techniques that are over 1000 years old. It is a painstaking process during which a mixture of silica sand, potassium, soda and lime is melted at 1500 degrees. Once it has cooled to 800 degrees and thickened in consistency, it is mouth-blown into shape by the local glass masters. Minerals are added to the glass mixture to create the bold colours and elaborate designs Murano is famous for. Known as ‘art glass\’, Murano glass comes in many forms, including tableware, figurines, jewellery and chandeliers.
